Youth Summer Camp 2012

TLW campers ages 6-14 are in for a real treat!  They'll become participants at Atlanta's premiere urban
farm near historic
Auburn Avenue and the Martin Luther King Jr. National Park. Naturally grown
vegetables, flowers chickens, butterflies and all the wonders of a working farm will be found in abundance
this summer.

Our camps extend the Truly Living Well mission by making environmental stewardship and consumption
of healthier foods exciting for children and adolescents. During our camp, students find themselves
engaged physically, mentally and emotionally, learning how to build, grow and sustain an organic farm.

Camp is nature based and experiential. Campers will learn Earth stewardship and principles of
sustainability through every day farm activities, including planting and harvesting, composting, "trashless"
lunch days, games, art and more. Each day is divided into activity blocks, which have a particular theme
or focus.

Mornings are spent actively learning how to physically care for a farm. Afternoons are used to reflect on
experiences and challenge one another to think critically on how food and agriculture affect our lives and
planet now and in the future.

Here's what a typical day will look like:

8:00 - 9:00 a.m. Campers arrive and get settled in. They have free time in
designated play areas. Choices can range from playing ball to throwing a frisbee,
doing some cool "sidewalk" art, blowing bubbles, or visiting the chickens.

9:00 - 9:20 Circle up! Morning news, chants and songs. On alternate days,
campers spend time in their very own self-selected, quiet “sit-spot!”

9:30 - 10:20 Activity I - Take part in a garden exploration and lesson, ie zoom in
on a worm's life, make soil, plant some seeds or seedlings  or learn about
beneficial insects by hunting them down (without touching!).

10:30 - 10:50 Snack Time

11:00 – 12:00  Activity II - Move around a bit more with garden games and
projects..... design and install a butterfly garden, build a shelter with all natural
materials, work on a "terra" mural or participate in a game of kick ball or soft ball.

12:15 - 1:00†Enjoy lunch in the pavilion, under a shade tree or anywhere you like
with a buddy within our designated camp space. …..or we might have indoor lunch in
a cool classroom,  a popular option last summer!

1:00 – 2:30 Activity III - Now it's time for reading, writing, reflection,
storytelling, drama and creative arts!† We'll be inside, where we can get cool and
comfortable in one of several classrooms.

will be using the Martin Luther King Jr. Natatorium, which is one block from the
